This NZ home is set on 20 hectares of farmland in the Kauaeranga Valley, Coromandel, sitting on a ridgeline with panoramic views of the farmland and sloping valley. The house is a space to retreat between filming for the clients that both work in the film industry. The brief mentioned ageing patina, sustainability, recycling and adaptive re-use and provenance of materials. Auckland based Herbst Architects concentrated the small mass of the building into a single geometric form that could hold its own in the vast landscape. Straddling the ridgeline the design engages with the sloping land at one end, and floats above at the other as the land falls away. Clad in rusted corrugated iron sheets reflective of surrounding sheds it almost appears as a rural camouflage. Materials include recycled materials and fittings which the clients procured over the duration of the build.
